As the first week of camp comes to an end, Kochavim have been busy having fun and making memories that will last a lifetime!

Kochavim have enjoyed a number of programs which revolved around exploring their identities and how campers as individuals can help support an entire team. This builds on the unit theme of K’lal Yisrael, which means the Jewish community and the people of Israel. Kochavim have a lot to look forward to including programs about different types of Jewish people, whether that be defined by country of origin, how they pray, or observance level of Judaism.

During a Kavanah service, campers and staff talked about the different ways people can pray, which then led to the break down and exploration of the various prayers that are said during services. The prayers we say can be generally broken into four categories, whether it’s asking God for something, thanking God for something, asking for forgiveness, or marveling at something. The campers were given a grid and wrote down the things they are thankful for, marvel about, would like to say sorry for, etc.  This went on to inspire the campers to truly look at the words when they are in services and to truly give their whole selves during this time.

During an evening program this week, the campers participated in a program called “If You Dream It”. This revolved around campers getting creative and relating Jewish leaders to Disney. Some of the leaders they learned about included Theodore Herzl, Golda Meir, Anne Frank, and David Ben-Gurion. They then went on to talk about specific quotes on the hopes and dreams people may have as Jewish individuals. And then the real fun began when campers were asked to create a Disney attraction around the various Jewish leaders’ lives like a Golda Meir roller coaster or a Theodore Herzl golf course. This was a fun way for the campers to learn about these important Jewish leaders, and by relating it back to something they already know, it made it much easier for them to understand and far more enjoyable!

Kochavim campers are really enjoying their time at camp, and they can’t wait for what the next 3 weeks has in store for them!
