By Robin Eisenberg, Camp Committee Chair

When I became Chair of the Camp Committee, I knew it was essential to truly experience camp firsthand. I had spent decades as a faculty member but really wanted to see the inner workings to be able to support the year-round team. Over the past three summers, I’ve had the privilege of being a quiet observer, a “fly on the wall”, witnessing Coleman’s inner workings in action. I do not take this opportunity lightly and appreciate the trust that Amy and the rest of the year-round team has put in me, to allow this special view of camp.

So, what have I seen, heard and been a part of…a truly extraordinary experience that I am so grateful for:

  • I went to Huddle each morning with the amazing Leadership Team to review schedule, get Health Center updates and hear maintenance needs.
  • I ate meals with a variety of different groups from the office staff and faculty to those working on special projects. Each person deeply committed to creating a unique, memorable experience for every camper.
  • I sat in the office and saw the staff field questions from parents and staff while arranging transportation and scheduling pickup of supplies and mail which then needed to be sorted and delivered while answering questions and making sure all systems are working.
  • I spent time in LaB (the Learning and Belonging) part of the day. I even was asked to be in one of the skits! I loved it when younger units gave their feedback after each session and the smiley faces were what they circled.
  • I wandered around camp. Seeing campers try new activities for the first time like the warrior course to playing their favorite sports to spending time in Graceland (art center) and ceramics and learning new skills like playing the guitar.
  • I had the opportunity to connect with some of the most dedicated staff from counselors to housekeeping and maintenance and kitchen staffs to our extraordinary unit heads. Each person doing their part to make Camp Coleman what it is…a magical place.
  • I spent time literally as a “fly on the wall” in the Health Center. Watching the doctors and nurses care for each camper and staff member with patience, precision, and compassion. I stood next to the Mobile Clinic and saw how this innovation made a difference in our campers’ experience.
  • I must admit that probably the most special time was when I was sitting in on the meetings of year-round team, Nefesh team, a bunk that won a visit to Amy’s house, a meeting of the Shlichim (Israeli staff), or the faculty. These meetings were wonderful opportunities for everyone to share what they were seeing, feeling and doing. These moments offered powerful insight into what makes Camp Coleman not just special — but sacred.

Each summer I’ve had the chance to quietly observe, I’ve come away with a deeper appreciation for the people, the passion, and the purpose that make Camp Coleman so special. It’s not just what happens here — it’s how it happens, with intention, care, and a whole lot of heart.
